A Note on the Course Offerings

Out of the courses listed above, only some will be offered for the school year.

2026/2027 Literature Courses

For the 2026/2027 school year, a 6th-9th grade course (Adventure) and a 9th-12th grade course (Early 19th Century) will be offered in-person and online. I will also offer a course on Jane Austen's works, if there's enough interest.

Express Interest

In literature you don't just read one poem or novel after another, but enter into a complete world of which every work of literature forms a part.

Northrop Frye, The Educated Imagination

What Parents & Students Say

Mrs. Smallwood's love of literature is very evident in the way she teaches class. She did a wonderful job picking out books that are enjoyable, but still push your understanding and help you grow. I would definitely recommend this class to anyone who is looking to grow in their vocabulary, understanding, and overall appreciation for wonderful classics! ~Elizabeth, 9th grade

More from 6th-9th Graders

This is one of the favorite classes I’ve taken, I’m going to miss y’all so much. ~Sicily, a graduating student

more from 9th-12th graders

As a homeschool mom, I have always valued the importance of good literature and good discussions. Our homeschooling journey took a new direction this past year and I knew I needed a good solution for my daughter, who is a voracious reader, entering her junior year of high school. I had a lot of apprehensions about turning literature over to someone else, until I met Esther. The first time I heard her discuss literature, she spoke with such passion and knowledge, I knew I could rest at ease. ~Amanda, Mother
