I appreciate very much that you are doing this class, and how much thoughtfulness, care and attention you are bringing to the experience. I feel lucky to have you! ~Father of boys
My literature class experience by Mrs Smallwood has taught me to think deeply about literature, and to be open minded to other ideas. The readings and class time have also been very enjoyable and instructive. I whole heartedly recommend her classes, and I will certainly be taking more in the future. ~Ethan, 9th grade
I had the opportunity to sit in on one of Esther’s 7-9 th grade classes and was delighted with her enthusiasm for the literature they were covering. She keeps the students accountable for keeping up with their readings and gently draws them into rich discussions. The atmosphere she creates in her classroom is professional and inviting. She did a fantastic job of choosing
age appropriate and challenging books that appeal to guys and gals alike. ~Jinger, Mother
Mrs. Smallwood’s class is enjoyable, especially for people like me, who love to read. I enjoyed having Mrs. Smallwood and others to discuss the books with. I feel like my vocabulary has increased after reading some challenging books and I like that she helped me understand
Shakespeare better. ~Noah, 8th grade
I have been taking Mrs. Smallwood's literature class for about three years now, and I must say, I love it. She is open yet direct, and approaches literature thoughtfully. All in all, this is a great class and I would definitely recommend it. ~Gemma, 11th grade
Esther's love for the written word is contagious, and her deep knowledge of the works studied makes these classes of the highest excellence. She fosters a classroom environment that is both supportive and intellectually stimulating where students develop skills of critical thinking and civil discussion. Our sons love being in her class. ~Bethany, Mother
Mrs Smallwood's literature class has been such a fun class to attend this year and has been one of my favorite classes overall! Mrs Smallwood puts so much time and effort into helping me understand and enjoy the books that are assigned. I have learned so much about southern culture as well as popular southern authors. She has also helped me to remember to read books with an open mind and try to understand them at a deeper level. ~Eliza, 10th grade
Mrs. Smallwood's love of literature and deep knowledge of the material has helped my daughter understand the books she is reading and apply what she is learning in her life and education. Mrs. Smallwood directs the discussion in ways that make it clear she has spent a lot of time on the material and understands it thoroughly. My daughter loves the class and looks forward to it every week! ~Jennifer, Mother
This year of literature has been nothing short of magical. I value that Esther has provided my daughter with great books and in depth conversation. My daughter has revitalized her love of books and satisfied her desire for thoughtful conversation about books that she may not have otherwise been exposed to. I love that my daughter is speaking about the books, and her classroom with such passion and fondness. I would highly recommend Esther’s class for anyone who wants their child to love literature. ~Amanda, Mother
As a homeschool mom, I have always valued the importance of good literature and good discussions. Our homeschooling journey took a new direction this past year and I knew I needed a good solution for my daughter, who is a voracious reader, entering her junior year of high school. I had a lot of apprehensions about turning literature over to someone else, until I met Esther. The first time I heard her discuss literature, she spoke with such passion and knowledge, I knew I could rest at ease. ~Amanda, Mother
I am very picky about literature. Maybe even a little snobby, so it is hard for me to entrust someone else to pick literature for my child’s homeschool year. But Esther chooses the kind of books that enrich my child’s school year. My son has always loved a good story, but having peers his own age and a teacher who asks thought provoking questions has challenged him to think about what he’s reading on a deeper level. It’s a feast of good stories, Shakespeare, and poetry. "Further up and further in!" Keep up the good work, Esther! ~Jenny, Mother
Mrs. Smallwood's love of literature is very evident in the way she teaches class. She did a wonderful job picking out books that are enjoyable, but still push your understanding and help you grow. I would definitely recommend this class to anyone who is looking to grow in their vocabulary, understanding, and overall appreciation for wonderful classics! ~Elizabeth, 9th grade
